2017-2018 Season

 

ARLINGTON, TX—Professor Kim LaFontaine, Chair and Producer of the University of Texas at Arlington’s Department of Theatre Arts, announces the 2017-2018 Maverick Theatre Company Season.

Maverick Theatre Company is excited to offer an exceptional mix of theatre, dance, comedy improvisation, musical theatre and opera events for the 2017-2018 season! This year, MTC is producing a hilarious Tony Award-winning musical; a Shakespearean comedy, two Puccini one-act operas, a world premiere by one of our playwrights-in-residence, dance concerts, improv events and a new MavLab series featuring faculty and student-directed works. The season leads with THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE by William Finn, Rachel Sheinkin, Rebecca Feldman and Jay Reiss. Shakespeare’s delightful comedy, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM follows! The spring brings two of Puccini’s best loved one-act operas, SUOR ANGELICA & GIANNI SCHICCHI, co-produced with the Department of Music. MavPlays 2018 features the world premiere of Natalie Gaupp’s 100 BRAINS. And, don’t miss the stunning choreography of MAVERICK DANCE COMPANY, the raucous on-the-spot comedy performances of FLIGHT 12 COMEDY IMPROV TROUPE, and the one-act series of innovative plays MAVLAB.

An uproarious, Tony Award-winning tale of overachievers’ angst. Winning isn’t everything. Oh wait, yes it is! Directed by Assistant Professor Dr. Anne Healy. A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM by William Shakespeare

In the Bard’s most enchanting comedy, young lovers find themselves in the middle of a dispute between the King and Queen of the fairies. Directed by Senior Lecturer Felicia Bertch. Production dates: November 15, 16, 17, 18, at 8:00 pm, November 19 at 2:30 pm, 2017. Performances of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM are presented in the UTA Mainstage Theatre located at 502 S. SUOR ANGELICA & GIANNI SCHICCHI by Giacomo Puccini

Two of Puccini’s best loved one-act operas. A tragic story of maternal love, loss, and hope contrasted with a roguish comedy. Directed by Associate Professor Dr. Soo Hong Kim. SUOR ANGELICA & GIANNI SCHICCHI is co-produced by the Department of Theatre Arts and the Department of Music. Production dates: February 27, March 1, 2, and 3, at 8:00 pm, March 4 at 2:30 pm, 2018. FLIGHT 12 COMEDY IMPROV TROUPE

A hilarious night of off-the-cuff comedy. Maverick Theatre Company's FLIGHT 12 IMPROV has a style that's fresh and interactive! This 12-member troupe features students from UT-Arlington and is directed by Associate Professor Joe Chapa. MAVERICK DANCE COMPANY

 

Maverick Dance Company presents VIA DANCE, a collection of progressive dance works by Artistic Director Amanda Jackson and Co- Director Meredith Knight, as well as guest and student choreographers. Every semester MDC creates thought-provoking and entertaining performances that will stir your senses. Join MDC for their winter concert Dec. 8, 9 at 8:00 pm and Dec. 10 at 2:30, 2017. The spring semester concert will be May 4, 5 at 8:00 pm and May 6 at 2:30 pm, 2018. Maverick Dance Company will perform at the Mainstage Theatre, Room 174, Fine Arts Bldg. North. MAVLAB

A One-Act Series

 

Come experience the inaugural season of innovative one-act plays that is MAVLAB. The series includes IVES LIVES by David Ives, directed by Associate Professor Dr. Dennis Maher, AND TELL SAD STORIES OF THE DEATHS OF QUEENS by Tennessee Williams, directed by Senior Lecturer, Detra Payne and THIRST by Eugene O’Neill, directed by Samantha Wierick. Production dates are October 26 – 29, 2017. In the spring semester enjoy THE RISE AND RISE OF DANIEL ROCKET by Peter Parnell, directed by C.C. Weatherly, and GRACE by Craig Wright, directed by Austin Bender. Production dates March 22 – 25, 2018. Please refer to uta.edu/theatre for each play.
